Benzene Exposure: The Signs and Symptoms

All the talk in the news lately about the fire that has been raging at the ITC plant in Deer Park, Texas has prompted a number of questions from our clients. One of the main ones being, “Should I be concerned about benzene exposure?”

Short answer—YES! Especially if you are living in or around Deer Park.

Benzene is a highly flammable (everyone knows this now) chemical used as a solvent and used to make may other products. Benzene is quite volatile (evaporates quickly), doesn’t really dissolve in water, and can seep through the soil. According to the CDC, benzene can attack the body at a cellular level causing your cells to function improperly. Breathing in high levels of benzene can produce symptoms immediately within minutes including:

  • Drowsiness

  • Dizziness

  •  Rapid or irregular heartbeat

  • Headaches

  • Tremors

  • Confusion

  • Unconsciousness

Long-term effects from benzene exposure can be more detrimental leading to harmful effects on the bone marrow and blood cells. Ultimately, the exposure could lead to leukemia or other forms of cancer.
